Xamariwë, the spirit of the tapir. When a great shaman falls gravely ill, the spirit Xamariwë [who dwells in the house of spirits in his chest] also falls ill. Then, Xamariwë goes to where there is a water source, where there is a fine whitish mud, and there Xamariwë drinks this mud with the water, which is like medicine. That is how he does it, that is how he will heal himself. And when he heals himself, the shaman will also recover, because Xamariwë drank this water [which is like medicine]. The xapiri spirits and the shamans act this way, they are different. That is why, for us Yanomami, the xapiri are good.
