These four ink sketches (Nos. 460-63) depicting interior views of the Carcassonne battlements and bastions have no apparent pencil studies. The first three were drawn with a quill point and the last one with a single-weight pen. It is quite possible that Kahn sketched all of them upon his return to Philadelphia. In this drawing the free linework is more striking than in No. 449. Here, at a much larger scale, the calligraphic squiggles are less believable as texturing and shading. In No. 461 the sharp perspective, with the vanishing point below the top of the battlements, provides a clue to the scale of the space and individual stones. Sketch No. 463 is almost a duplicate of No. 462; affected by the pen type, it is sketched with less freedom and flair.
