CHAKAIA BOOKER: Unpacked: Reception with the Artist on November 6, 6-8 PM

David Nolan Gallery is pleased to announce Unpacked, the gallery's third solo exhibition of Chakaia Booker. At our new location in Tribeca, we turn to the diverse media Booker has mastered alongside the rubber-tire sculptures for which she is best known. The exhibition brings together free-standing and wall sculptures, from small to monumental; multilayered collaged works on paper, a practice she has maintained since 2009; a tapestry that came from one of these works; and a series of photographs. 

Booker experimented with production processes and methods to make marks that draw from the visual language of her sculpture. Just as she makes sculptures from unexpected materials, her multilayered collages are born out of an incredibly meticulous process. Booker tears and cuts thin, delicate papers that become transparent during printing, allowing each layer to bleed into the next, combining them into final forms. Booker's experiments with paper stand in stark contrast to her monochromatic rubber-tire sculptures. The works on paper are colorful, textured, and richly layered, much like the way the artist adorns herself.

Our aim is to show the range of Booker’s practice across media, unpacking the artist’s creativity. Each medium is different, yet carrying the same DNA that is uniquely hers.
